Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats is an UNKLE soundscape DJ mix, originally recorded for Radio Ape in Japan, Do Androids Dream Of Electric Beats was the first in a line of a series of UNKLESounds mixes. The simple way to tell the difference between the two is that the bootleg has a barcode. The unknown artist in the Tai Mix (Starwars Theme) is: Slave One - Bantha Trax, a 200 pieces 7", released 1999. Very nice intro material...
it is, isn't it ? A nice record shop owner gave the box to me for free back then, and it was the best present I ever got, hands down. That Tai mix.... mmmmm
Incredible piece of work. I keep coming back to this mix after so many years for inspiration.
i'm curious as to why Whitney Houston isn't credited on the track listing for Tai, and why James Caviezel isn't credited for the sample from The Thin Red Line during Medway's Release in the Gi mix and approximately 45 minutes in on the Tai mix toward the end of Eye For An Eye, just prior to Bushwacka! Feel It...either way, amazing mix.. it's interesting how similar how James Lavelle's Fabriclive 01 mix is to DADOEB. they're both worth the investment.
Yeah it's pretty solid unkle. All i'd say is beware of paying alot for this release. The limited 500 rarely come up for sale, i'm sure this was re released and not as limited as the first release. I bought mine in HMV for 15 pounds about 4 years ago so I know for a fact mine is not a limited edition, yet it is a mach for the version featured in the images. Still worth a listen though especially for the Radiohead remix used in the film Vanilla Skies.
Surprised this hasn't been mentioned before but this mix reappeared on Radio 1's Essential Mix (6/1/2002) in shortened form. Pete Tong mentions on the broadcast that Lavelle originally gave them a three disc mix and was told to go away and cut it down in order to fit the EM's 2 hour time slot (although the 3 disc version was broadcast live on the Radio 1 website the following week). The cut down version went on to become "Big Brother Is Watching", another UNKLE Sounds release, and features such time-saving replacements as DMX vs. Tears For Fears and the ghastly "Phat Planet"/"This Is The End" hook up.
I don't agree with the ordering of the cds Shin-Gi-Tai. If you listen carefully they seem to fit better as Tai-Shin-Gi. At the end of Gi a sample says "UNKLE entertainment thanks for listening," then another saying quietly "May the force be with you," and finally a sample of a rocket blasting off. At the very beginning of Tai the vocoder counts down to the Star Wars theme, then you get another vocoder telling us: "You are listening to UNKLESounds in the mix". So as far as I am concerned they are ordered Tai-Shin-Gi (this however assumes that the 3 discs are part of the same linear piece). Nonetheless, all 3 are fantastic but Gi is just a little more fantastic and Shin just a little less fantastic. May the force be with you.
An outstanding, exceptional release in the way of trip hop and abstract production. The collaboration of James Lavelle and Dj Shadow, along with all the other artists involved in the UNKLE sounds project, is completely amazing. The fact that it was ever limited to 500 copies is baffling, for it would have sold out in a flash. This set of cds is great, and a must buy for anyone that is a Trip hop or abstract house appreciator.
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Beats is an outstanding release by Unkle, but there is a certain amount of confusion surrounding it. It’s first release was limited to 500, yet there would seem to be more than that floating around….and there is. A second release was made, still under the ‘for promotional use only’ tag (numbers will still be relatively low, a few thousand maybe). The differentiating feature is a barcode on the top side of the slip. The rationale behind this ‘unofficial’ wider release would be the licensing of certain tracks from the album would be impossible in an official commercial release….hence, ‘for promotional use only’. People saying that these barcoded DADOEB’s are bootlegs should have a long hard think about it….among other things. Cause if they are bootlegs someone has put in one hell of an effort, firstly production (and if you did do a bootleg would you really differentiate it by wacking on a barcode…Duh), and secondly, getting it distributed to LOTS of shops (they aren’t just popping up in the UK, but also the US and Australia, and I would guess numerous other places). If a bootlegger can manage this, maybe he/she should think of starting label. The more likely answer would be that a certain not to be mentioned label realised the licensing issues involved with this release and rather than altering the original sets decided to do a little creative circumvention.
This release is similar to James Lavelle's FABRICLIVE.01 - it is as if he mixed Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats, then simply compressed it down to make FABRICLIVE.01. Of the 23 tracks on FABRICLIVE.01, 16 are on this release, and nearly all follow the same playing order as they do on Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats. "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is a Phillip K. Dick novel, written in 1968, and was the basis for the movie "Blade Runner".
