Laughing Stock is the fifth and final LP from Talk Talk, released on November 19, 1991 from Polydor records. Laughing Stock. Virtually ignored upon its initial release, Laughing Stock continues to grow in stature and influence by leaps and bounds. Picking up where Spirit of Eden left off, the album operates outside of the accepted sphere of rock to create music which is both delicate and intense recorded with a large classical ensemble, it defies easy categorization, conforming to very few structural precedents - while the gently hypnotic Myrrhman flirts with ambient textures, the percussive Ascension Day drifts toward jazz before the. Talk Talk - Laughing Stock review: Like I could summarize my feelings for this album in this little box. It is astounding that Laughing Stock was one of the first albums widely considered post rock for many reasons. First, Talk Talk was a New Wave band, and a fairly successful one at that. By their final album, the band or what was left of it abandoned that staple and moved to a more experimental sound. Spirit of Eden, the album preceding this one, abandoned all pop sensibility and led directly into this remarkable, influential album. But how influential was it, really From my point of view, no one takes any ideas from Talk Talk anymore. Laughing Stock is the fifth and final studio album by British band Talk Talk, released in 1991. Following their previous release Spirit of Eden 1988, bassist Paul Webb left the group, which reduced Talk Talk to the duo of singermulti-instrumentalist Mark Hollis and drummer Lee Harris. Talk Talk then acrimoniously left EMI and signed to the jazz-based Verve Records, and recorded Laughing Stock at London's Wessex Sound Studios with producer Tim Friese-Greene from September 1990 to April 1991. Laughing Stock would also be Talk Talks final album as the bands members decided to pursue solo careers, especially Mark Hollis who would then release his 1998 self-titled album. Ultimately, Laughing Stock along with their previous record, Spirit of Eden and Slints Spiderland are considered some of the first true post-rock records and would later play an enormous influence on more modern post-rock bands in the decades to come. Laughing Stock Q&A. Producers Tim Friese-Greene. Writers Mark Hollis. More Talk Talk albums. Live at Montreaux 1986. Missing Pieces. Show all. These magnificent reissues of English art-rock innovators Talk Talk's 1991 final record Laughing Stock and their reclusive leader Mark Hollis' 1998 self-titled solo album are presented on immaculate vinyl. They sound as good as these albums have ever sounded, in any format. There are many ways for a band to follow up a hit. Genre: Post-Rock. The world needs to hear this album, even if you havent liked post rock before, because I guarantee that this is not the type of music you think of when you think post rock. Unfortunately, it should be. Full Review. Audacious and forward-looking, Talk Talks final album, Laughing Stock, remains one of the most stunning creations in all of music. Listen to Laughing Stock right now. Widely regarded as Talk Talks holy trinity, these singular, pigeonhole-defying albums are thrown into even sharper relief when you consider that EMI initially marketed Hollis team as a glossy, synth-pop act akin to labelmates Duran Duran
