Album

Wiretap Scars is an album by Sparta, released on August 13, 2002 on DreamWorks Records and peaked at number 71 on the Billboard 200. Only months separated this release from their debut EP Austere. The album is greatly influenced by the music of At the Drive-In, with whom most of Sparta's members originally played before their split in 2001. The vocals and track naming in particular reflect At the Drive-In's Relationship of Command, the last album made by the group. This is in contrast to the music of. Sparta's debut EP showed promise, but Wiretap Scars is a sound reward. It fills the void where At the Drive-In was with focused post-hardcore frazzle, leaving the relentless experimentation to Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez in Mars Volta and focusing instead on a terse melodic sense. Wiretap Scars is accessible, but on Sparta's own terms. Mye and Cataract return from the EP the reflective Echodyne Harmonic has been more fully realized. Because of this, Wiretap Scars does lack some of the screamy immediacy of Relationship of Command, but it's certainly more balanced. That Ward's frantic guitar lines haven't changed much since the last time he went down on record won't make any headlines, and since his guitar sets the tone for the majority of the album- well, you Young Sherlock Holmeses have probably already solved that mystery. Scars seldom slows its pace, receding only a couple of times for a mid-tempo breather, and, to put it in as direct terms as possible, it's damn fun. Album 2002 12 Songs. More By Sparta. See Scars. Where the latter seems much more melancholic and in parts ambient, quite some songs on 'Wiretap Scars' have a much more rougher feeling and musical build up. But also the slower and more quiet songs differ, as more instruments are used. Like cello-like strings on 'Collapse' for example, or the elctronic like intro to 'Cataract'. While hairy frontman Cedric Bixler and guitarist Omar Rodriguez did, indeed, venture into weirdo space jazz under the name the Mars Volta, guitarist Jim Ward, bassist Paul Hinojos, and drummer Tony Hajjar stay on course as Sparta. Wiretap Scars echoes the reckless beauty of the trio's former band
