Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore. Washing Machine is the ninth studio album by the American experimental rock band Sonic Youth, released on September 26, 1995 by DGC Records. It was recorded at Easley Studios in Memphis, Tennessee and produced by the band and John Siket, who also engineered the band's previous two albums. The album features more open-ended pieces than its predecessors and contains some of the band's longest songs, including the 20-minute ballad The Diamond Sea, which is the lengthiest track to feature on any of. Sonic Youth's eleventh album Washing Machine is the first record to almost exclusively feature Kim on guitar rather than bass, and contains some of their lengthiest material since Goo and Daydream Nation, including the epic Diamond Sea which drifts onward for an unprecedented 20 minutes, still the longest track on any SY album excluding the SYR releases. The first show I'm aware of that featured Washing Machine material was on March 25th, 1995 in Granada, Spain. Towards the end of a fairly lengthy set they played instrumental versions of three new songs including Becuz & Washing Machine the third song's identity is unknown to me. Listen free to Sonic Youth Washing Machine Becuz, Junkie's Promise and more. 11 tracks 68:17. Sonic Youth's eleventh album Washing Machine is the first record to almost exclusively feature Kim Gordon on guitar rather than bass, and contains some of their lengthiest material since Goo and Daydream Nation, including the epic The Diamond Sea which drifts onward for an unprecedented 20 minutes, still the longest track on any Sonic Youth album excluding the SYR releases, and the extended version on The Destroyed Room. Sonic Youth - Washing Machine 1995. To favorites 6 Download album. Listen album. Noise Rock. Washing Machine is the continuation of Sonic Youths 1994 Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star. After the Experimental Jet Set, the band decided to make a hiatus from performing live and focusing on several side projects. Moore and Gordon also had their first child, Coco. According to Moore, their daughter provided a different perspective for the band. Unlike previous Sonic Youth albums, Washing Machine was recorded at Easley Studios in Memphis, where indie rock bands such as Pavement, Guided by Voices and Grifters recorded albums before. That must have been an argument Sonic Youth heard enough, as come 1995s Washing Machine, their squall had softened into sparkles. At least sometimes. The album begins with Becuz, a nasty romp led by Gordons groovy bass playing and her whispered sneer. Like on JC, Shelleys backbeat anchors the song as it begins to swell. After two minutes, the whole thing gathers into that typical Sonic Youth feedback tornado, this one fairly heavily resembling the sound of a dentist drill. But something different happens: The songs basic structure reassembles and keeps going, like the melody wrestled c. Easily their most adventurous, challenging, and best record since Daydream Nation, the album finds Sonic Youth returning to the fearless exploration of their SST records, but the group has found a way to work that into tighter song structures. Not only are the songs more immediate than most of the material on their earlier records, the sound here is warm and open, making Washing Machine their most mature and welcoming record to date.
