If there's one word that comes to mind while listening to 2018's The Capitol Studio Sessions - the debut album from part-time jazz pianist and full-time Jeff Goldblum impersonator Jeff Goldblum - it's charm. Joking aside, just as with his acting, Goldblum's musical stage presence percolates with his unmistakable charisma, and further cements his long-standing persona as a witty, quirky, gregarious presence. While the album often feels like Goldblum giving one big wink and a smile to his adoring fans after another, part of the fun is that he has the chops to back it up. It Only Took Him 50 Years. The actor-keyboardist used to bluff his way into playing piano bars as a teen. Bolstered by guest vocalists Haley Reinhart, Imelda May and Sarah Silverman alongside trumpeter Till Bronner, Goldblums The Capitol Studios Sessions - which hit Number One on Billboards Jazz Albums chart - blends standards Herbie Hancocks Cantaloupe Island, Charles Mingus Nostalgia in Times Square with the actors goofy, whimsical crowd banter. The Capitol Studios Sessions is billed as his debut album, but it feels more like a variety-show special, with Goldblum feeding off the energy of a studio audience and exchanging flirty banter with guest vocalists like Haley Reinhart. In truth, its both: The album was recorded at Hollywoods Capitol Studios, which Goldblum converted into an ad hoc jazz club, with a boozed-up crowd of fans who do not address him as daddy. So we get the freewheeling spirit of a live album and the pristine mix of a proper studio LP. Больше альбомов этого артиста. Cantaloupe Island. Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. And now heres part-time jazz pianist Jeff Goldblum, bringing his weekly revue residency with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra at LAs Rockwell Table & Stage into Capitol Studios to siphon his classic scat sounds directly into the stockings of the worlds nans, who liked him in that one with the massive spaceships. To be fair, he makes a finer showing of it than our Bradley
I'm not a big follower of Jazz, but this is more than an album. They specifically recorded it live as they wanted to reproduce the atmosphere of the live show and it works, the pressing is so detailed that you feel inside the room in an intimate show. The music itself is wonderful, uplifting, sexy. The trumpet player, Till Bronner is apparently very highly regarded in the jazz world. Jeff is exceptionally natural and deserves recognition for his accomplishments as a piano player and the presenter. Wonderful album. Highly recommend you pick this up, it's a great record to own!
It seems to me like they've pressed it at 45 rpm and made it a double LP as an excuse to charge more money for the product. Personally, I think they could've fit all the tracks on one single LP
This was half speed mastered. The record is pressed on 200 gram vinyl at 45rpm for greater information in surface area. If you listen to it on a half way decent system the sound quality is like being in the room. This is the same techniques MoFi uses for maximum sound quality. It has nothing to do with making more money.
Should 2 releases be posted? One for the miss printed 33 1/3 and one for the correctly marked 45?
The copy I received of this album had a defect. Disc 2 is pretty bowled, so watch out for that as I'm sure my copy won't be the only one affected.
I would hugely recommend a Vinyl Flat also, get it with a Groovy Pouch which acts as the heat pouch. Bought one to correct a severe heat damaged rare record so bad that the needle would bounce off the warp, had to leave it cooking on lowest setting for about 28 hours, but it's made the record completely playable without any damage to SQ that I can tell. Saving that record paid for the Vinyl Flat immediately. Now I'm the same as  bfrankel and don't return any albums unless they're obviously beyond a joke.
oh wow, thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a try.
Buy a Vinyl Flat...led me to only returning/exchanging albums if it is a serious warp
I told amazon that my replacement copy still had the same warped defect as the first, so they send out another replacement that was also warped. :(
I returned my warped copy only to get a new copy with the exact same issue :( I really wan't to own this record but what's the use if every time I buy it the 2nd disc is warped/bowled? :(
My labels do correctly state 45rpm. Though why have a double LP at 45, I don't get that?
Supposedly 45 would offer better sound quality since it contains more sound information as well as the higher velocity. In other words this may or may not have fit on a single LP at 33 1/3 but they decided to go 45 just for sound quality, or maybe it was just a hair too long for a single LP and it would fit nicely on 2LP at 45 (im not sure of the running time). Personally, when 12" 45's are done well they sound great but in some cases I shy away from them because any imperfection like a warp is magnified, so your more likely to get skips or unplayable records, when if it had the same warp played at 33 it would be fine (think of it like a motorcycle jump, the needle is hitting that warp much faster so it will jump farther).
First, the LP version of this album is incorrectly labeled 33 1/3 rpm. The discs in this set are actually 45 RPM!!!These LP discs were pressed by GZ Media in CZ.This is a great contemporary jazz album, masterfully performed and recorded. Who would think that Jeff "Jurassic Park" Goldblum would have it in him or that he was even a musician. I found this out from watching the Graham Norton Show where Jeff performed with Imelda May. Obviously recorded live in the studio with chatter and applause, sound is great as well as the pressing and packaging quality. Though supposedly recorded at Capitol Studios, wherever they may be since the Capitol building in Hollywood was sold, it was released on the Decca label? Decca is once again under the Universal umbrella, but this time it is worldwide. Since Universal(UMG) acquired EMI, the massive company is now Ume. But, about the album, in any format, if you like contemporary jazz in a small intimate club setting, great vocals and songs which have become standards, you will enjoy this album, playing it over and over for years to come.
