Album

This Brings Us to Volume 2 is an album by American jazz saxophonist Henry Threadgill with his band Zooid, featuring Jose Davila on trombone and tuba, Liberty Ellman on guitar, Stomu Takeishi on bass guitar, and Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums. It was recorded in 2008 and released on Pi Recordings. Given Threadgill's reputation as a musical polymath, this shouldn't be a surprise, because. II sounds like a rather mercurial mirror image of its 2009 predecessor. The first is that both albums were recorded during the same sessions in 2008. The second is the aesthetic involved in its approach to composition versus improvisation. This Brings Us To, Volume II is the sequel to 2009's This Brings Us To, Volume I Pi Recordings, Henry Threadgill's celebrated return to the studio after eight years. Culled from the same recording session, these complimentary releases are the renowned multi-instrumentalist's first commercially available recordings in almost a decade. Volume II finds the legendary AACM innovator's venerable Zooid ensemble exploring a similar range of material as its predecessor, working subtle variations from his singular aesthetic. This new approach to playing jazz seems mathematical in theory and therefore threatens to sound sterile in practice. It does not. Zooid sounds as fluid and soulful as a late-night jam lubricated by wine and spirits. It doesn't obtusely go over your head or play down to you. It is the sound of many things happening, yet not overloading the ears and brain. What Henry Threadgill has accomplished has no repetition. If there are patterns, they are thickly wrapped and deeply buried in the delicate sound that is Zooid. Once again, Pi recordings has given us one of the best albums of the year. Henry Threadgill Liberty Ellman Avant-garde jazz. This Brings Us To, Volumes I & II are the result of an eight-year gestation period during which Threadgill and his band Zooid have fine-tuned his unique system of improvisation in a group setting. The compositions provide the construct for open dialogue within the group while encouraging the musicians to seek a new way to improvise, away from a reliance on chords or scales or any of the timeworn clichés of certain free jazz. Volume II about 44 minutes long was again mixed by Liberty Ellman, in June 2010, and mastered by Steve Fallone.
